TOM'S BEST (AND WORST)
OF 2004

The efficiency of the Moviepie staff has kind of left me behind on reviews this year. But even with my lack reviews, I can at least comment on my best and worst for 2004.

The IncrediblesBest Animated Movie:

The Incredibles
I really like this Pixar stuff. I like the fact that they can make their movies enjoyable for both the kids and adults. They have just enough adult references in there as well as the fart jokes for the younger crowd.

Shrek 2 - In a very close second place.

Please Stop Remaking Movies:

Flight of the Phoenix
Sure, it was a somewhat entertaining 90 minutes, but why remake a movie into something that isn't as good as the first one? Did you know that in the first movie, the rebuilt plane actually flew for real? Sure, the stunt pilot was killed in a crash, but they didn't use special effects for that.

Best Science Fiction:

I, RobotI, Robot
This movie didn't get very good reviews, so I didn't bother seeing it in the theater, but waited until NetFlix sent it to me. I really enjoyed the movie and the special effects of the robots were excellent, even if they did kind of remind me of G. Lucas's battle droids in a way.

Best Comic Book Movie:

Spider-Man 2
I did enjoy this movie, but I think the first one was still a little better. They should have had more with Doc Ock though.

Worst Movie Villain:

Worst Movie VillainFahrenheit 9/11
The most evil person in a movie this year award has to go to our fearless leader George Dubya Bush, and the millions of people in the red states that thought he needed his job back.

Bloodiest Movie:

The Passion of the Christ
Holy crap! A religion based on the beating to death of a carpenter? The slow motion tearing of flesh was just nasty, even for a guy like me who loves a good juicy horror movie.

Best New York Destruction:

The Day After Tomorrow
Once again New York is destroyed in a disaster movie by a large wave and a meaningless plot unfolds around some really cool special effects. If that isn't scary enough, CNN coverage of the 2004 tsunami will definitely scare you.

Best Shark Movie:

Open Water
You thought Jaws was scary? This movie had real sharks... not a plastic robotic shark named Bruce.

I'll Never Eat at McDonald's Again:

Super Size Me
Never, ever, again will you catch me in McDonald's again after seeing this educational documentary. That McMovie was just McDisturbing, McDisgusting, but very McFunny and McEnjoyable.

Napoleon DynamiteBest Movie I Avoided For a Long Time:

Napoleon Dynamite
Friends kept talking about this movie, so I finally saw it. GOSH (with emphasis) it was a funny movie! After I'm done with my 1% milk, I'm going to take my bike over some sweet jumps.

Get This Thing Out of My DVD Player!

The Chronicles of Riddick
I lasted about 40 minutes and made a very strong effort to understand the movie. After saying WTF? several times, the movie went back into the postage paid envelope and back out into the cold mailbox with the flag up.

Sequel Disappointment:

Starship Troopers 2
The first movie was kind of a guilty pleasure for me, so I had some hope that the sequel would have similar charm. Nope. Similar to The Chronicles of Riddick, this movie made a quick trip to the mailbox.

I'll Never Grow Up and Be an Old Actor:

The AviatorThe Aviator
Poor Leonardo DiCaprio... He will never grow up and be anyone other than Jack in Titanic, will he? The Aviator is a good movie though, but a bit long in the business part of the Hughes story. I'll have to give them credit for the best plane crash scene for 2004 though.
