TOM'S BEST (AND WORST) MOVIE MOMENTS OF 2003
Rather than doing a top 10 list, I like to comment on movie moments of 2003. I just can't get my favorites in order I guess.
Bad Physics:
This would have to go to The Hulk. On the DVD extras, they say that the big green dude weighed about 14 tons, could run 300 mph, and jump a distance of about 5 miles in a single hop. In the movie, the Hulk appeared to jump around like a very lightweight flea with no mass. This fancy new CGI graphics looks great, but when are they going to add a bit of mass to these computer generated creatures? Slow them down a bit, give them some weight, add a drag inducing atmosphere, and thing will look a lot more realistic. I don't know why, but that just bugs me!
Best Computer Animation with Live Actors:
This would have to go the freaky little precious Gollum of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. You could just about feel him doing is "kitty kneading paws" on Frodo's sleeve!
Best Computer Graphics:
Yep, this would have to go to Finding Nemo! Seeing that movie's water effects almost had me wanting to go grab a towel to dry my hair off after seeing the movie.
Best Documentary:
Winged Migration. Who would have thought that watching birds fly could be so interesting? Almost more interesting than the movie itself is the bonus documentary on how it was made.
What the F____?:
If you have seen Matrix Reloaded you will know what goes in the blanks. Ok, I didn't see the whole movie so maybe this isn't fair to post this. I had to give up after about 40 minutes and return the DVD since I was nearly confused to tears about what was going on.
Most Disturbing:
Final Destination 2. Yeah!!!! As you know from my movie reviews, I'm always looking for a really messy movie that will disturb me. This movie took me about 45 minutes longer to get through since I kept finding myself saying "Ewwwww! I have to see that again!" and hitting the back button on my DVD player. The squishy death scenes in this movie - and the near misses leading up to them - really make for good tense fun. Very graphic once each character meets their doom.
Most Disappointing Science Fiction:
There really wasn't much good sci-fi this year to talk about, but I was actually kind of excited when I saw previews for The Core. I had to wait longer when the movie was postponed due to the Columbia shuttle disaster (there is a shuttle crash in the movie). The movie sucked. How are you going to drill down into the middle of the earth and spin up the core with a few nukes while walking around outside the drilling spaceship? Duh!
Best Pirate:
Johnny Depp was a total freak in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Just watch him in every scene even if he is just in the background. Just seeing his facial expressions and gestures while he isn't the focus of the scene. Excellent!
PLEASE don't do another one:
Tomb Raider 2 (i.e. Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. I haven't seen Gigli yet, but Angelina Jolie's latest computer game rip-off would have to get my vote for the stinkiest pile in the cat litter box for 2003. The movie was just plain boring!
I'll get the DVD Award:
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Yeah! This will be a great living room shaker with the exploding ships and splintering wood.

Nice Try Award:
Good to see the lumpy haired Rob Zombie trying out his creative skills on something other than music. Sorry Rob, House of 1000 Corpses just shows you need some more practice. Stick with music as your day job.
Worst Movie that I have to see:
Gigli. I've heard so many bad things about this attempt that I just have to see what the big deal is behind J-Lo and Ben. Isn't this the reason they almost got married? This will have to be a group movie with pizza, a few friends, and most likely loud laugher as we did when we got together to see Mariah Carey's fall from stardom (and sanity) in Glitter.
Best of the Year:
Sure, I can't make up my mind on order of favorite movies, but I do have at least one favorite. That award will probably have to go to Finding Nemo. Great looking movie, fun humor, the fish don't break into song every few minutes, and Disney only put their logo on it rather than making the movie.
