 LINDA'S BEST OF 2000
Best movie that no one saw but me:
In the Mood for Love (coming out in February... see if it makes my Top Ten of 2001!)
Top Five Moviepie Moments:
Getting to see Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood For Love in October, a good five or six months before official release in the U.S.... and getting this close to getting an interview with WKW and the movie's luscious Hong Kong movie stars Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung. My friends can attest to the fact that I almost threw up with excitement when I heard about this scoop. Even though we didn't get the interview, it was easily the highlight of my movie-going this year.
- Winning a freakin' bicycle at the screening of Return to Me on the same day that I got laid-off (dismissed?) from my job of a year and a half at a certain Large Software Corporation in a town called Redmond (not to name any names).
- Having my skills as a proofreader validated by the director of Grease (no less), when I had to comb over the lyrics of all the songs in the movie for the Grease Sing-Along.
- Having two of my Moviepie reviews published in the local Enterprise Newspapers, and getting paid for it!
- Oh, and getting to see a hell of a lot of free movies this year because of Moviepie's press status. Special mention goes to the Edmonds International Film Festival, for being the first film fest to give us a pass, despite the fact that the opening film was about a giant flying turtle and starred Ernest Borgnine.
For god's sake, give these actors more parts!
Lauren Ambrose (Psycho Beach Party, Swimming)
Jack Black (High Fidelity)
Gina McKee (Croupier, Wonderland)
Don Cheadle (Traffic, and anything he's ever been in!)
Best Child Actors:
Karine Vanasse (Set Me Free)
Rory Culkin (You Can Count On Me)
Worst Child Actors:
The boy who played John C. Reilly's son in The Perfect Storm
The curly-haired girl in Remember the Titans
Best Soundtrack for a Crappy Movie:
The Beach—A fine collection of pop and techno songs.
Best Soundtrack for a Pretty Good Movie:
O Brother, Where Art Thou?—A surprisingly wonderful collection of American Depression-era folk, blues, gospel and bluegrass songs.
Best Soundtrack, Period:
Björk's Selmasongs, soundtrack to Dancer in the Dark—If I'm feeling slightly melancholy, it can make me weep.
Most nightmare-inducing scene (as in, I actually had a nightmare!):
Christian Bale running naked with a chainsaw in American Psycho.
Earliest flashback scene in a film ever:
A mere 20 minutes into Red Planet, Terrence Stamp has a flashback to earlier in the film.
Best examples of why boys should grow out their lovely hair:
Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 2
Chris O'Donnell in Vertical Limit
Ioan Gruffudd in Solomon and Gaenor
Guilty Pleasure:
Charlie's Angels
Guilty, No Pleasure:
Coyote Ugly
Most fun to be had in a movie theater:
Showgirls, narrated by David Schmader
Grease Sing-Along
Straight from the Heart at SIFF
