What can I say about When Harry Met Sally except that it is pure
movie-making at its finest. We have the girl, the boy, the fantasy, and the
dream come true. There are no plot twists, there are no artsy moments, there
is no fine cinematography. It doesn't need it. This movie defines the genre
of romantic comedy.
Meg Ryan plays Sally Albright, a journalist who agrees to drive her friend's boyfriend Harry (Billy Crystal) to New York after graduation. Naturally on their trip they hate each other and don't meet again for five years, when a chance airport encounter reaffirms their dislike for each other. But five years after that, they meet again, both having grown up and changed, and they become best friends as they try to get over their respective failed relationships. They share everything together--secrets, desires, whims, fantasies, dates, and dreams. But a mistake threatens to come between them, and destroys their friendship, proving the theory that "men and women can't sleep together and stay friends". This was Meg Ryan's breakthrough movie and is one of her best. Nora Ephron knows the formula and plays it well. This is required viewing for everyone who has ever had a close friend of opposite gender. |
