- USADirector: Jonathan Mostow - Reviewed by Tom Captain Dahlgren (Bill Paxton) is in command of an American submarine
disguised as a German U-boat that is supposed to go intercept its fellow U-boat,
the disabled U-571. Their goal is to take over the German sub, and capture the Enigma code box that will allow them to decode messages and give them an advantage in winning the war with Germany. Things go very wrong, and the
Americans end up losing their ship and find themselves in the middle of the ocean on the disabled
German U-571.
Lieutenant Tyrell (Matthew McConaughey), who was turned down on his promotion to captain his own ship, gets the chance to take over after their own ship is blown to bits and sunk. The young whining captain and his crew get chased all over the ocean and manage to escape a few times by diving the sub deeper than it was designed to (doesn't this happen in all sub movies?). They make good use of the last remaining torpedo and you can probably figure out that it is a happy ending. The movie is full of action and explosions, and sounds great with the right DVD equipment, but the plot is very predictable. I think they tried to make the movie to compare with Das Boot, but they sink very short of their goal (pun intended!). There is just something about the movie that makes it too "bright and clean" for a sub movie. In Das Boot they are trapped in this leaky bucket at the bottom of the ocean, covered with grease and blood and sitting in the dark. In U-571 it just seems like there is a leaky pipe here and there, but just not enough water to make it fully realistic. The movie is good fun, but there is just something missing from it. If you want to see a good submarine movie, Das Boot is still the best movie around. |
