Michael Douglas plays Robert Wakefield, the newly appointed American Drug Czar, whose own family is hit hard by drugs when his teenage daughter engages in dangerous and highly addictive behavior. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays a upper-class California socialite who is unaware that her husband's "business" and wealth is fueled by the drug trade. Benicio del Toro gives an outstanding performance as a Tijuana policeman who is confronted with terrible decisions on all sides. Between these stories are sub-plots and interweavings all around; you find yourself wrapped up in the drama of each moment, wondering how each scene ties into the others. The cinematography was beautiful with several neat coloring tricks and voice-overs that ran into the next scene. The whole movie had an extended documentary feel to it, but with all the action and drama of Hollywood. The acting was excellent all around; it's no wonder Oscar murmurs are already buzzing. There are several disturbing images so be prepared for violence. I was pleasantly surprised however, at how the violence was counteracted with tender moments. This movie really made you think, and I found myself silently thanking Soderbergh for bringing this gem to screen. |
