There's nothing spectacular about this movie. It's just another in a long line of romantic comedies, but it's certainly worth a rainy-day watch. Michael Keaton is pretty charming in this, and if you can get past the Geena Davis factor, it's entertaining. This movie gets at least one slice for taking place in New Mexico, a state near and dear to my heart (and bonus points for featuring the La Fonda Hotel, too). I award another slice for Christopher Reeve, who in a display of semi-creepiness, walks and moves around, pre-accident.Speechless is a classic love story between two people who can't fall in love: in this version, they are the speechwriters for opposing senatorial campaigns. When Julia (Davis) can't sleep during the heat of a campaign, she meets Kevin (Keaton), who also can't sleep. Sparks fly, but then they find out they're on opposing teams. The game of stealing each others' speeches and campaign ideas heats up as the election draws near. Enter Bob (Reeve), who is semi-engaged to Julia and who drives Kevin insanely jealous. But then Kevin gets information that might lose Julia her job, and must decide between career gains and love. Can you stand the suspense? This is a light-hearted movie, okay for a family, but other than Davis and Keaton's fine performances, there isn't really that much memorable about it. |
