Ogre Shrek and Princess/Ogre Fiona discover that "happily ever after" doesn't necessarily follow on the heels of a beautiful wedding. It's everyone's rude awakening that after the honeymoon, you have to deal with your new in-laws! In Shrek 2, our hero reenacts Meet the Parents when Fiona receives an invitation to visit her mum & da, the King and Queen of Far Far Away.
The kingdom of Far Far Away is a ritzy little town (not-so-loosely based on Hollywood, CA) where the fairy tale elite meet and greet. Fiona's parents are not the only problem, of course. The kingdom has a puppet master: a professional fairy godmother with nefarious intentions. Can true love survive this latest challenge? Well... I don't want to give too much away so I'll make this short and sweet: Shrek 2 is better than Shrek. It's funny as hell and chock full of the pop-culture references you loved in the first one. From Michael Jackson to COPS!, our hideous, consumer-driven, uniquely American culture is aped again and again. In combination with the clever fairy tale references, Shrek 2 is well-written and undeniably charming. Oh yeah, it's also beautifully animated and gorgeous to look at. And I must say kudos to whoever put the soundtrack together. Suffering from a morbid disgust of show tunes and the Elton John/Phil Collins Disney crap-ola, I very much appreciate a cartoon soundtrack that includes Tom Waits and Nick Cave. Lord, how refreshing! Man, listen to me go on. All I can say is, yes, it's worth your time and money. And really, you don't want to miss Antonio Banderas in what is surely the best performance of his career. Trust me on this. |
