Admittedly, this is my first Scary Movie of the series. The series was started as a spoof of Scream by the Wayans' brothers, its success spawned a sequel, then number three was picked up by the Zuckers, who did the hee-larious and corny Airplane! among others. If you are familiar with any of those names, you know what kind of humor is involved. Cornball re-enactments with a huge cast of familiar faces, poop, fart, and naked jokes, and intentionally over-done slapstick acting. Scary Movie 4 picks up where the others left off, I suppose. Which just means a handful of recurring characters spoof a handful of movies that were released in the last few years. In this case, you'll find references, among others, to War of the Worlds, Million Dollar Baby, The Grudge, and (impressive turn-around on this one) Brokeback Mountain (all of which I've seen), as well as Saw, Saw II, and, uh, whatever other movies I didn't recognize (those would be the movies I have not seen). Some of the stuff warrants a few chuckles, and other scenes fall flat (surprisingly the ones involving Zucker stalwart Leslie Neilsen). And can I just say that I hate Chris Elliott? Hate him. HATE HIM.My co-hort, as we left the theater said she hated the movie, in fact. I said, "Compared to what? You have to admit it was more entertaining than Annapolis!" Suffice it to say, this is one of those movies that you'll see regardless of anything I have to say. Or else it won't even be on your radar to fret over, much like the previous three films were (or were not, as it were) for me. |
