There was no way in hell I would ever set two eyes on this film had I not stupidly come across it on cable in the middle of the night and didn't realize what I was watching for 15 minutes. However, I had to throw my pre-conceived notions aside and admit this movie was FUNNY. You just can't get better than choice lines such as: "Gonna get you a double-scoop o' skank" and "I got me a good job at Wal-Mart", and "just because you're carrying your daddy's baby don't mean you can flit around here in your underwear young lady".... OH MY. I never quite understood whether Jerry Springer's focus here was to poke fun at his own show, humanize his show, humanize him, or poke fun at Texas. I expected this to be a movie based on the Jerry Springer Show, but it really was about the actual show. We follow two sets of people who are to appear on his show, and their lives leading up to it. One is a group of black women who have all slept with the same man (topic: "My girlfriend's a ho"); another is a teenager who sleeps with her mother's husband and to retaliate her mother sleeps with the girl's boyfriend (topic: "I'm carrying my daddy's baby and my mother slept with my fiancé"). Bear with me here.... The acting was actually really good. Maybe it's easy to pull off being a skank but I did feel the actors did a great job at it. Jerry himself is really very funny... if this movie is an indication of what goes on behind the scenes you can't help feeling just a little bit sorry for the man. (I said a little bit.) Despite the subject manner and the general stupidity, you have to laugh at all the trailer park scenes and liquor store jobs and arrests. I thought it was humorous, and I give it two slices, but I wouldn't recommend renting it. Just wait for it to come on cable and then sit back and have a good laugh. |
