Hopkins is a former anthropologist who was out in the jungles of Africa studying
apes (isn't that what they always study out there?). Suddenly, he vanished
for two years and was later found somewhat insane and living with a family of
apes. He was then rescued from an African prison and put in a prison back
in the US in the psycho ward with a bunch of other screwed up people.
A young psychiatrist (Cuba Gooding Jr.) who wanted to make a name for himself volunteered to risk his life to find out what is going on in this guy's mind. It was dangerous, since the former ape man would easily go into a rage even if only slightly provoked and beat the crap out of whoever crossed his path. There is a great scene that takes place in an airport where he is totally freaking out and guards are flying everywhere! In a way, the movie is very similar to Silence of the Lambs, and Hopkins is almost playing the same kind of character (he is pretty good at it, too... I will admit!). He plays a similar intelligent guy who is so dangerous that the guards won't let anyone near him—until the young psychiatrist earns his trust and gets him talking. Pretty good movie overall, but I think this may have been one of those short lived movies in the theater since it isn't really anything new or extremely different from so many other movies out there. Also, the apes didn't look quite right, so I suppose they must have had a zipper somewhere—if you know what I mean! |
