I.Q. This is not one of Meg Ryan's best movies but it's still funny and sweet. The plot is loose, to be sure: Ryan plays Catherine, the niece of Albert Einstein in 1950s America. Robbins plays Ed, an auto mechanic who is interested in science but is uneducated. And Matthau plays Einstein in a role that befits him nicely.

When Catherine and her pompous fiancé have car trouble and roll into Ed's auto shop, Ed is instantly smitten with her. Einstein picks up on this, and in a scheme to make Catherine notice Ed, he engages the help of his friends to transform Ed into a temporary physics genius. Antics ensue for the rest of the film until ultimately, someone is going to find out the truth about Ed. But will Catherine have already fallen in love by then?

Purists may decry a film that makes light of Einstein but for the rest of us, it is a great afternoon movie with a bit of humor and witty dialogue. Besides, who can resist Tim Robbins' twinkling eyes?
