Director: Anthony Drazan - Reviewed by Kerri I'm not sure what the hell happened in this film but I'm convinced to run
screaming from anything with the words "Sean Penn" on the box. The slice is given generously only for the fact that Meg Ryan had the
unfortunate luck to be in this abomination. I take back anything I ever said about
Proof of Life, because
Hurlyburly made that movie look like a wonderful piece of cinematic work.
I'm not even sure what the plot is. No, that's not true, there isn't one. The official description says something about "the intersecting lives of several Hollywood players and wannabes whose personal lives threaten to veer into a catastrophe more interesting than anything they're peddling to the studios" ... all they seemed to have found are their mirrors, cocaine vials, and in the case of Sean Penn, his own body parts. Really, if I wanted to watch Sean Penn masturbate, I'd... no I'd never want to do that. I didn't need to see that. Ryan plays some floozy who gets thrown from a car. Garry Shandling, Chazz Palminteri, Kevin Spacey, and Sean Penn play lowlifes in Hollywood who spend a lot of time doing drugs and having long drawn-out conversations about nothing. Robin Wright Penn plays some girlfriend, and in a disturbing sideline of pedophilia, Anna Paquin makes an appearance as the boys' plaything. I was so bored I had to force myself to watch the ending of this film, and now I can't even recall it. It is possible for Meg Ryan to have a terrible film, and Hurlyburly is proof of that. |
