2001 - USA
Director: David Mirkin - Reviewed by Kerri Two messages this film conveys are: Men only think with their penises, and
love will hurt you. Perhaps this was someone's way of getting back at the
objectification of women in movies throughout the years, because every man
in this film is an idiot who loses all thought processes when Max (Sigourney
Weaver) or Page (Jennifer Love Hewitt) Conner walk in the room.
Fans of the breast footage in Erin Brockovich get double the action in this flick as we watch an hour and a half of Weaver and Hewitt's breasts dominating the screen. Max Conner is a successful, attractive woman who is a major con artist. She gets men to marry her, and with the help of her equally conniving daughter Page, takes all their money in divorce before they even consummate their marriage. The reason for this is simple according to Max: years before, a man had hurt her and left her with a daughter. In order to protect Page, she strives to keep her from falling in love with any man. The two go to Palm Beach to swindle tobacco baron William Tensy (Gene Hackman). Page is eager to work on her own, but she meets a bar owner (Jason Lee) whom she falls in love with. This distresses Max, who plans a counter-connive to prove to Page what she thinks of men: "No man will refuse a woman's body." Unfortunately this film doesn't do much to dispel that myth. Even heart-throby Jack the bar owner seems to fall for Max's seductive act. This results in a lot of cry-acting from Hewitt; I can't really comment on her acting ability because I couldn't get past those breasts. Jason Lee seems to have grown up from his Chasing Amy days, but he still has that boy-next-door face. Ray Liotta is actually pretty funny as one of Max's victims, but Gene Hackman's role was tepid at best. The movie was humorous for the most part, but the overall message made life seem so shallow I'm begging some man to come forth and prove it wrong. Then again, I don't look like Jennifer Love Hewitt. |
