I admit, I was there to see Angelina Jolie, who I think is pretty much fab in anything she does, so I went to see this despite the huge Winona Factor (which is a big negative point in my book). Apparently, Winona produced this film as her baby, because of her own bouts of depression since she became a star (I ain't knockin' Winona for her real-life personal problems, I'm knockin' her because she pretty much has sucked in every movie since Heathers). The non-fiction book that the film is based on, by Susannah Kaysen, is extremely readable because it is clever as well as cutting in its depiction of a girl's mental hospital during the turbulent hippie-era of late-60s/early-70s America. Well, Winona did not disappoint... meaning of course she was exactly as bad as I had expected and hoped for. I wanted to slap that blank, doe-eyed stare off her face, grab her shoulders and shake her, yelling, "Last time I checked, you were freakin' 29 years old! Do you really think you can pass for 18?" Actually, I was kind of secretly hoping that Angelina Jolie would slap her for me (her saucy character certainly had it in her). I would've paid full price for that! Winona has a memorable scene where Whoopi Goldberg, playing the mental hospital nurse, throws her into a tub of icy cold water to snap her into reality when she's having a fit. Winona, in her outburst, gets to "play crazy" in a way that was on the verge of laughable. My friend probably voiced it best, saying, "Winona was so bad that I couldn't watch her contorting face... so instead, what else was there to look at? Well, since she was wearing a wet nightgown, I couldn't help but notice that, ahem, the water obviously wasn't as cold as it they pretended it was." It's a rental, just to see Angelina Jolie, who completely steals the movie. |
