Another fine Meg Ryan movie, this one doesn't really depart from any
other formula movie she does, but heck it's sweet and I love it. Kevin Kline
gets to reprise his ability to act, in a stereotypical fashion, as a member of
another culture.
Ryan plays Kate, who is engaged to Charlie (Timothy Hutton), and is terrified of flying. Charlie has to go to Paris for business and while there, falls in love and breaks his engagement. Kate wills herself on a plane to find him, and enter Kevin Kline as Luc, the Parisian on his way home. He gets Kate over her fear of flying and they arrive in Paris. A string of bad events happens to Kate, and Luc keeps running into her, and they devise a scheme to get Charlie back. There's more to Luc than meets the eye, however, and as he helps Kate try to get Charlie back, he's got secrets of his own going on. Naturally Kate and Luc fall in love and there's some slapstick comedy, international jokes, and funny bits. The plot certainly isn't a stretch but it's a romantic comedy starring two beautiful people so what can you expect. Jean Reno actually adds some spark as the police officer out to get Luc. There's some beautiful scenes of France and some touching vineyard moments, and as I say, watch it on a rainy afternoon for a light-hearted pick-me-up. |
