Forget it.This mediocre film has some lighthearted moments but has a storyline so bare you could drive a truck through the holes. This is supposed to be another one of Crystal's light-hearted comedies about love and marriage, but flops. There is no chemistry whatsoever between him and Debra Winger. (On that note, I've never quite figured out the appeal of her in the first place, as I find her excruciatingly annoying.) Someone on the IMDB said the basketball players in this film were better actors than the characters, and I have to agree for the most part. The whole premise of the movie is that after Mickey (Crystal) and Helen (Winger) meet and have a fun-filled lovefest in Paris, settling down to marriage in the States doesn't hold a candle. He travels too much as an NBA referee, she's stuck at home in some middle America town with a dead-end job. Enter the frail demented father, the stress of a new marriage, the sacrifices each make to no avail, and you get pretty much two hours of how dismal marriage is once the honeymoon is over. The story is related by a bunch of dinner guests as they await Mickey's arrival; this ploy is thin at best but did provide some humorous elements to this sad plot. I guess this film appealed to me somewhat in that it does move quite nicely, and there are some funny bits, and I'm a big Billy Crystal fan. However, when the front of the box says, "If you loved When Harry Met Sally, you'll love Forget Paris"... don't be fooled. This movie is nowhere near that caliber. |
