This is one of those easily forgotten movies that probably lasted two weeks
in the theatre when it came out, but if you're a fan of either actor it's
worth a watch.
Michael Caine plays Lawrence, a successful European swindler, who coaxes great sums of money out of wealthy women. Steve Martin plays Freddie, the bumbling small-town American con artist who nevertheless threatens Lawrence's territory. When Freddie won't get lost, Lawrence challenges him to a "duel", and they choose a wealthy American named Janet Colgate (played by Glenne Headly) as their victim. The better part of the movie is slapstick Steve Martin, as the two try to swindle money out of Janet. There is nothing extremely catchy about this movie except that it is good for a few laughs. Put it on while you're cleaning house or doing some other chore, as it is not engrossing enough to merit your full attention. |
