O.K., so my friend wanted to see this one because Jodie Foster is in itand I'm glad we took the bait because it's so not about Jodie. The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys is about these four Catholic schoolboys (Jodie plays a nun at their school) and how they cope with their very real-life problems through comic book characters they create. There's no grown-ups telling these kids how to deal with their emotions.
So, have you heard of the book Killing Monsters: Why Children Need Fantasy, Super Heroes and Make-Believe Villains by Gerard Jones? Well, I haven't read it, but the idea is there in the title. I wanted to create my own super hero when I got out the movie. Don't you just want to annihilate somebody sometimes? You think, "If I were a super hero then that person could be a super villain." They might get away to fight you another day, but at least you got the chance to fight them. The animation in Dangerous Lives is by the guy who does "Spawn". The live-action-to-animation sequences are seamless. It's a compelling story, but I can see why it didn't get a lot of publicity. It's not because it's a second rate story or lousy actingit's because it's so fresh and the filmmaker took the risk of integrating the animation. |
