The opening scene of Crossroads sets the bar for this movie. Enter Lucy (Britney SpearsEeeeeeeeee!) dressed only in her underwear and singing along to Madonna. The audience, full of nervous tension in anticipation of seeing their idol on screen bursts out into inappropriate laughter… (Umm, you guys, I don't think that was meant to be funny…) But the bar has been setJump Britney, jump! On graduation day, Lucy, the valedictorian, has feelings of great regret for not having had much fun in her high school career. It seems that Lucy was a nerd and a bit of a science geek (Yeah, I'm gonna believe that one!) who decides that she is going to "go all the way" with her lab partner, Henry (Justin Long). As it turns out, the duo's relationship is not going to the next level. (D'oh, Thwarted again!) Instead of making Henry's lifetime dream come true, Lucy somewhat reluctantly keeps a promise to her two ex-best friends. Eight years prior, the three girls made a pact to meet up at midnight on graduation night to dig up a box of trinkets and dreams that they buried in a field. Lucy, Kit (Zoe Saldanas) and Mimi (Taryn Manning) drifted apart in a big way. Kit is considered the local (pregnant!) white-trash type and Mimi is the school's prissy princess. They don't get on as well as they once did, but this will soon change when they all end up on a cross-country road trip. That's right, boys and girls, a road trip where lots coming-of-age is destined to happen, weather we like it or not. As they embark on their wild adventure, we get to see how three teenage girls and one ex-con (Anson Mount) forget that there's a camera around and "get real". Laughter and tears are sure to follow. Okay, okay, maybe it wasn't all that bad. There were some cute moments and there were some really bad moments. Sometimes you say to yourself, "Boy, that Britney can act!" and other times "Britney, what were ya thinkin'?!?" fills your head. However, it was the audience that was the true compass for which direction the film would take us. They were a rowdy bunch, I tell ya. In the end, every 13-year-old girl in America will end up making this movie one of their favorites and all will be right in the world of Britney's checkbook (though I may have missed the true meaning to the undying friendship of teenage girls…). Tom, avoid the temptation of seeing Britney's bare midriffyou'll have to sit through a flick that I know will make you squirm. There are some nice movie stills that will take care of that curiosity. |
