| CHUCK & BUCK |
2000 - USA
Director: Miguel Arteta - Reviewed by Linda One weird-ass creepy, squirmy, but funny film. Definitely points for
originality. Chuck and Buck were best friends when they were boys, but
Chuck moved away. When adult Buck's mother dies, his friend Chuck comes
to the funeral (after they hadn't seen each other for 15 years or so).
Buck is basically stuck in the past, and pretty much has been obsessed
with his past friendship with Chuck, who has since moved on, has a
fiancée, and is a hotshot music producer in LA. Since Buck doesn't have
anything to keep him in his hometown anymore, he takes Chuck's polite invitation
to "come for a visit" and ends up packing up his toys and childhood
record player, and moves to LA to renew their friendship. It becomes painfully
obvious that Buck is obsessed with Chuck, and basically begins stalking him as
Chuck tries to avoid him.The story is quite original, and even though Buck's emotionally stunted child-man is extremely unnerving. Though he constantly sucks on a blow-pop, fixating his disturbing blank stare on Chuck, there is something sympathetic about him. He is just trying to relive an idealized love from his past, despite the fact that the world has changed around him. But this film makes you search your own childhood memories, trying to make sure that you don't have a "Buck" in your past who is going to come back and stalk you. |
