| CHASING AMY |
1997 - USA
Director: Kevin
Smith - Reviewed by Kerri I can't remember what made me watch this in the first place, having never
seen the other Jay/Silent Bob flicks (Mallrats, Clerks), but I remember
feeling really refreshed by the content and the humor. This movie certainly
excels in wit and realism. The plotguy falls for girl who is gaycould
have been clichéd and hopelessly mangled, but it wasn't. Instead it evolved
into a twisted love story that addressed the complication of relationships
in this day and age.
This was Ben Affleck before he was Ben Affleck. This was Jason Lee straight out of his skateboarding days. The two, who play best friends and business partners, play off each other as only true friends in life can. I thought Lee's performance as the jealous, immature best-friend Banky to be stellar. Joey Lauren Adams plays the cute fellow comic book artist who turns Affleck's head; much to his chagrin, she is gay. Holden (Affleck) and Alyssa (Adams) become the best of friends and eventually, lovers. The beauty of this film is that it does not end there; it addresses the complications when one has to give up their lifestyle in the name of love. But it gets even better, as the movie goes down a side road into another conflictthat of past lives. Holden isn't bothered by the fact that Alyssa currently slept with women; what bothers him is a seemingly innocent act Alyssa committed in the past. We don't see the Hollywood ending here, either. Holden blows it. You are left shaking your head in wonder at the stupid mistakes he then makes. But this is reality, and in reality, people do stupid things. How fortunate someone had the decency to present this to the audience, rather than insult us with happy fabrication. The DVD comes with deleted scenes and interviews in between with Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, and Ben Affleck and should not be missed. |
