| CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE |
2003 - USADirector: McG -Reviewed by Linda
The film wastes no time, packing in the laughs within the first scene. Our Angels Dylan (Drew Barrymore), Natalie (Cameron Diaz), and Alex (Lucy Liu) are in Mongolia, rescuing Some Important Government Guy (X-Files' Robert Patrick) who has been kidnapped. Bad guys are after this encoded ring that he has, which apparently has the original names and addresses of all the people in the government's witness protection program. There are only two of these rings (of course you need both of them for it to "work"), meaning that all the badasses, from the Irish mafia, to yakuza, the Italian gangsters, to agents-gone-bad want a piece of this. Gosh, sounds kind of complicated. But never mind! Who needs to focus on plot, when instead you can put our heroines in all sorts of flashy disguises (like as strippers, butch forensics experts, ditzy surfer girls, and, my favorite, Hot-Dog-On-A-Stick vendors) and crazy situations? Watch gravity be defied again and again, as the filmmakers mock action films ranging from James Bond, to Raiders of the Lost Ark, to The Matrix. See motorbike duels, monster trucks, mechanical yak-riding, and more! Oh, and did I mention that this is all done in high heels? All the actresses look like they are having a blast, and the fun is infectious. There are more jokes per minute in this second Charlie's Angels film than the original, and I dare say overall this movie is even more fun than the first. Bernie Mac, as the new Bosley, fits in quite well, and there are cameos from all sorts of familiar faces (don't want to give anything away). There has been a lot of press-hogging by a certain Demi Moore, who fares well will her golden pistols and impressively glossy mane of hair... but it is refreshing that she actually doesn't steal the limelight from the three stars. Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle is the perfect summer movie. It is ridiculously entertaining eye candy that gives you more than you expect, yet doesn't tax your brain, or make you feel bitter for feeling a little bit poorer. You bet I'll be in line for the next one! |
