was surprised at how good this film was. Given Brendan Fraser's recent choices
for acting jobs I thought, oh no, here's another bomb, but something made me go
see this flick (the devil made me do it?) and I loved it! Both Elizabeth Hurley
and Fraser were excellent in their roles, and the plot was funny, sweet, and had
enough surprise twists to keep you begging for the next scene.
Fraser plays Elliot Richards, a San Franciscan computer nerd with the personality of a doorknob. It's really quite painful to watch his interaction with his coworkers and he does a great job playing the office cad. He is infatuated with Allison, the office babe, and after an ill-fated attempt to ask her out he moans, "God I'd give anything..." Flash! Here comes Elizabeth Hurley, a.k.a. the Devil, in a smashing red outfit and the key to all of Elliot's desires. All he has to do is sign the phone-book length contract, give away his soul, and he'll get seven wishes. ("I, Elliot Richards, hereby known as The Dammed"...The Dammed??"). What follows is a hilarious, curse-of-the-monkey's paw portrayal of the Devil proving that you have to be careful what you wish for. With each wish you're wondering how she is going to twist it next. Hurley did a fabulous job, as did the rest of the ensemble cast, Elliot's coworkers, who kept popping up in every "wish" as alternate characters. The costume changes were a plenty, not only with Hurley's 1500 red outfits every time the camera turned away, but with the transformation of Elliot in every wish. The dialogue was witty, and both actors proved they can do comedy well. The ending, while I won't give it away, was also a pleasant surprise and seemed to sum up the film nicely. There is very little profanity, no sex, and it would be very suitable for a family flick. Bedazzled gets my vote for a DVD purchase in the future. |
