I loved this movie the first time when it was called
French Kiss.
No seriously, this is another great Meg Ryan romantic comedy. In this movie, Meg is supposed to be all "edgy", which means she wears black eyeliner, lots of leather, and drives a motorcycle. Still, she's cute in this role and I detected a bit of DeeDee from Joe Versus the Volcano coming through. Matthew Broderick plays himself as usual, this time as an obsessed, geeky, home-town astronomer boy. These two meet when Sam (Broderick) receives a Dear John letter from his girlfriend Linda (Kelly Preston), who's on a teaching exchange in big, bad New York City. He runs off to find her, takes up residence in an abandoned building across from her and her new boyfriend Anton (Tchéky Karyo)'s apartment, sets up a lot of astronomy equipment to spy on her, and then embarks on this twisted game of charts and graphs and scientific data on his girlfriend. Enter Meg Ryan as Maggie, whose ex-fiancé is the very man Linda is now with. Together she and Sam devise a plan to destroy the relationship... and guess what happens? Well, I won't ruin the ending for you. Ha Ha. The movie definitely had its quirky moments, but the similarity to French Kiss was a little bizarre. I rather like Meg Ryan in this because she didn't resort to a lot of the same character traits she usually has in her movies. There's a charming scene in which "colorful" grandma comes to visit, and a great "I'm from France-Superman" story (you'll have to watch it). Single-handedly the best thing about the movie is the soundtrack! I usually don't pay attention to the music but in this movie every song was perfect. We're talking Neneh Cherry singing "Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer. How quirky is that? An excellent addition to your Meg Ryan collection overall. |
