As I’ve mentioned in previous years, sometimes I purposely choose films of a given theme on a festival day, and sometimes it’s just a coincidence that I wind up attending screenings that share some kind of common thread. The latter was the case yesterday, as I wound up with two very different movies about teenagers. First up was The Deflowering of Eva van End(6/8), a darkly twisted but simultaneously quirky and cute Dutch dramedy about a mousy, bookish girl named…

Though this was only my second day of TIFFing, it was the fourth day of the festival, and I’d been hearing a few accounts of ticketing snafus at the various venues, movies starting up to an hour late and general unpleasantness when arriving for screenings. My day-one experience at the Bader had been pretty close to ideal – the line was let into the theatre nice and early, and the screening started right on time – so I wondered whether…

There’s something comforting about the arrival of the Toronto International Film Festival, and settling in to my first screening of the fest, each September. Despite all its accompanying aggravation and frustration and run-ins with clueless newbie volunteers, TIFF comes with a weird familiarity that, for me, is like slipping on your favorite cozy sweater after having tucked it away in storage for a year. 2012 is my 23rd (!) year attending the fest, so there’s obviously still enough left to…

It’s always sad when Hot Docs ends. It’s like the end of ten days of documentary-movie camp, during which I got to hang out with all kinds of neat people and make new friends and do fun things like hurry from venue to venue to see a whole slew of really amazing films. Today was the last day of the festival and, though I’ll be glad to say farewell to the schedule that’s been tucked in my bag all week,…

Partly by design and partly by coincidence, my entire day – in terms of screenings and experiences – somehow dealt with waiting. Literally and/or figuratively. First up was Waiting for Lightning (6/8), director Jacob Rosenberg’s film about pro skateboarder Danny Way and his decision to try to jump over the Great Wall of China. On his board. Weaving preparations for the jump with Way’s turbulent life story and interviews with his family and friends, Lightning traces the origins of his…

One of my favorite things about Hot Docs, and documentaries in general, is learning about something – a person, a place, a practice, an event, an idea, whatever – I might never have heard of before and might never have otherwise discovered. It happens every single year, and I always leave the fest feeling a bit like my brain’s grown a few millimeters as a result. For example, until I saw The Revisionaries (6/8), I had no clue that the…
