When the last day of SIFF arrives, it is a cross between a mad scramble to use up vouchers and see as many films as possible (in the past, I've seen up to four movies on the last day), or relaxing, calling it good, enjoying the weather, then topping off the day with a couple of flicks. This year I chose the latter. Among the TBA movies announced was my last screening, but I'll get to that in a second.…

The marathon is coming to an end. When I call SIFF an endurance sport, I'm only half-kidding. Seriously. At three-and-a-half weeks long, the festival goes on forever... long enough for me to fall into the swoon of first love, then slowly get into a comfortable groove, then loose enthusiasm from hanging out too much ("I just want to see other people! Like, oh, I don't know... The Goonies!"), to panicking as the fest comes to a close, and running back…

Stephin Merritt of the alt-pop band The Magnetic Fields is one of those musical characters that you either love, or you have simply never heard of him. I adore Magnetic Fields, so I was thrilled to hear that Merritt was going to come to SIFF with his San Francisco International Film Festival-commissioned score to the 1916 silent film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea(7/8). Much fun was to be had at the evening itself at the gorgeous Paramount Theatre, as Merritt…

Whoah. I knew it would all catch up to me. After taking a week off from work (i.e. My Real Job) to go to SIFF last week, I was out late Friday night for a couple of movies, then left early on Saturday morning with 'Pie Pal Jen to go to Astoria, Oregon for The Goonies 25th Anniversary Celebration (which will be another blog post later). It was a weekend packed full of fun, but on the drive home on…

Wow. The 'Pie had some technical difficulties the last couple days, but finally we got it cleared up, and the site is back live! So we've got a little bit of catching up to do from the last couple days... So my day started out the day with a movie about, yes, my people! Patagonia (5/8) is about a historical connection that I knew nothing about: Welsh immigration to Argentina. The story alternates between two unrelated storylines. Gwen and Rhys…

During the Seattle International Film Festival, I always enjoy asking random people what films they've enjoyed at the fest so far. Sometimes answers are all over the map, but more than one person has gushed about the film Cairo Time (on friend loved it so much she went to BOTH screenings). Writer/Director Ruba Nadda's film is about a Western woman named Juliette (the always fabulous Patricia Clarkson) who travels to Cairo, Egypt to meet up with her UN-worker husband for…
