April is drawing to a close and that can mean only one thing: the return of Toronto’s annual documentary festival! Hooray! As anyone who’s read my fest coverage over the past five or six years knows: it’s my absolute favourite film fest.
This year, Hot Docs (running April 25th – May 5th) celebrates its 20th anniversary, and will screen some 205 documentaries from 43 countries around the world. A record number of directors (160!), alongside numerous film subjects, are slated to be in attendance for their screenings. As well, the Scotiabank Big Ideas Speaker Series will give audiences the opportunity to participate in extended Q&A sessions with doc subjects – such as Anita Hill and Romeo Dallaire – after screenings of their films.
Networking opportunities and industry forums abound, and a number of special events – including an outdoor screening of Brothers Hypnotic – are planned as part of the festival’s anniversary celebrations.
