the organizers did consider cancelling the remainder of the festival, but decided not to let terrorists dictate how we conduct our lives. they felt (and i agree) that an event celebrating filmmaking from around the world was a good way of recognizing the global community... i.e., that people around the world, regardless of who they are or where they come from, can share in the arts.
on friday at noon, at the very end of "serendipity," a film fest rep walked to the front of the theatre (during the credits) and asked that we all observe three minutes of silence. without prompting, everyone stood up and was SILENT. 800+ people, all standing... without so much as a throat-clearing or a bag rustle. it was oddly moving.
and, back on topic, my very last film fest movie was the rescheduled screening of "lovely & amazing," starring catherine keener. it was very good (CK was excellent, as ever), but it wasn't a movie that utilized your standard film structure. it doesn't really have a beginning and it doesn't really have an ending... it's just kind of a slice of life, as if you're watching a segment of a very long TV show and you're just tuning in for one chunk of the show between commercial breaks.
does that make sense??
anyway, now the fest is over and i will spend the next 11 1/2 months waiting for it to come around again.
*sigh*
