Toronto International Film Festival Diary 2003

September 4-13, 2003

Vickie

9-1-03

Well, color me FREAKIN' SHOCKED.

Today was Pick Up Your Tickets, See How You Did and Possibly Crumple Into a Weeping Ball of Goo Day, and I'm completely stunned that I didn't do as horribly as I thought I would.

I waited in line for just over an hour (there were already a couple hundred people in line when I arrived at 8:20am...and the box office didn't open until 9!), and finally arrived to pick up my order. I waited anxiously as the (thankfully) helpful volunteer darted inside to collect my tickets. When she returned, I quickly glanced down at the large red numbers marked on the front of my envelopes. 21 of 24 requests on the day pass, 7 of 10 coupon requests.

Wait. Seriously? Really????

So, of the 34 films I requested, I actually got 28 (!!!!!), one of which is a ticket for my must-see film, Casa de los Babys. WHEW!! Maggie Gyllenhaal, here I come! ;-)

And, almost as importantly, I GOT A TOTE BAG! A nice, two-toned, grey and black, water-repellent job that contained, well, not much. But still, A TOTE BAG! Yay!

There were only six films I'd selected for which I remain ticketless. They are, in no particular order:

* Pieces of April - the Katie Holmes comedy-drama directed by Peter Hedges (About a Boy)

* 21 Grams - the multi-storyline drama starring Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Benicio del Toro and Clea DuVall

* Matchstick Men - it was the ONLY movie the fest scheduled for Saturday morning (normally there are at least five or six films before noon to choose from), so EVERYONE ordered tickets for it and it is now a lost cause

* 11:14 - a thriller about a violent night in the life of a seemingly benign small town, with a cast that includes Hilary Swank, Rachael Leigh Cook, Shawn Hatosy and Colin Hanks

* Bright Young Things - writer-director Stephen Fry's adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel, Vile Bodies

and

* I'll Sleep When I'm Dead - a British crime thriller starring Clive Owen and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Charlotte Rampling

With the exception of Pieces of April, I'm not really too bummed about missing out on the others. I'm still clinging to the hope that I'll either be able to snag some same-day tickets for those, or find suitable alternatives. The line up to order more tickets was WAAAAY too long for me this morning, so I'm just gonna try my luck later in the week.

For now, I'm heaving huge sighs of relief and thanking my lucky stars that, despite 61 boxes of orders before mine, I came out okay in the end.

(But I still think the system sucks. ;-))
