Toronto International Film Festival Diary 2002

September 5-14, 2002

TIFF Ah, September. The kids go back to school. The crisp, cool fall weather is on the way. The new TV season is about to start. And the Toronto International Film Festival comes to town.

Perfection.

This year will be my 13th attending the festival. Despite the fact that the organizers' sorely-in-need-of-rethinking ticket-lottery system could have dealt me a severe blow, I have a solid 32 films on deck. I have completed my pre-fest preparations—which basically means shopping for lots of small, portable, calorie-laden snacks to pack in my bag for those long days where breaking for a sit-down meal just ain't gonna happen—and am ready and rarin' to go.

I've been fortunate enough to see a few pre-fest screenings already, and if Moonlight Mile (absolutely LOVED it), Tuck Everlasting (very sweet), Miyazaki's Spirited Away (another gem) and Phone Booth (very cool) are any indication, it's going to be a banner year.

Roll camera. Speed. Action!

TORONTO DIARY:

8-28-2002—Frenzied anticipation and the quest to find Roger Ebert

9-2-2002The DOs and DON'Ts of film festivals (such as noisy snacks and body pungence)

9-6-2002—Vickie's first full day at the fest and already a man removes his pungent shoes and someone steals her seat

9-7-2002 (Pt. 1)—Michelle Pfeiffer glows in White Oleander and the new press conference moderator pisses off both Salma Hayek and Vickie

9-7-2002 (Pt. 2)—Another reason to love Parker Posey as she's spotted sitting with the regular folks at Michael Moore's hugely popular Bowling for Columbine

9-8-2002 (Pt. 1)—Vickie voluntarily watches a movie starring Mickey Rourke and she sees the hyped Frida

9-8-2002 (Pt. 2)—Film fests are all about movies like Spellbound, a surprise treat that makes a spelling bee champ seem like a movie star

9-9-2002—The kinky Secretary kicks ass, literally and figuratively - *whapish*!

9-10-2002—Campbell Scott's Roger Dodger has clever writing, and Roger Ebert has a hissy fit

9-11-2002—The one-woman Sept 11th response Reno: Rebel Without a Pause, a new Kevin Kline flick, and Vickie walks out on her first film

9-12-2002 (Pt. 1)—Meet the film fest-goer from hell: Mouthy Martha

9-12-2002 (Pt. 2)—The feel-good flick o' the fest Bend it Like Beckham and topless female boxing

9-13-2002—People at the fest are worn out, and Vickie gets a ridiculously long-winded explanation about the merits of lanyard

9-14-2002—It's the last day, the pickin's are slim, and Vickie's ready for Nyquil

FINAL THOUGHTS—Check out the award winners, plus Vickie sums up her TIFF 2002 experience
