FROM THE HEART Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam |
1999 -
India
Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali - Reviewed by Linda Sometimes there is a very thin line between a good movie and an awful movie. There is something about Bollywood musicals (films from Bombay, India's "Hollywood") that I find excruciatingly cheesy, but I find that I just can't look away. Straight From the Heart is a delightful example of what I'm talking about. The acting is groan-worthy, the plot is silly, and they substitute Budapest for Italy, for cryin' out loud (and we're not supposed to notice the Hungarian language written on taxicabs and street signs?!?). But gosh, everyone in the film is totally beautiful, they wear brightly-colored clothes (and sometimes sparkles!), and break into song and dance at any given moment. Plus I now have a crush on brooding actor Ajay Devgan (apparently an action star trying to break into romance/musicals). One of my favorite scenes is a astonishingly choreographed 10-minute musical interlude involving kite-flying of all things! My friends who accompanied me to this film probably summed it up best: When the lights came up, Kerri, slack-jawed in astonishment, said, "That was outstanding!" and Morris said, "I think that is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but I somehow enjoyed it!" |
