Startup.com
is one of the more timely documentaries to come along in awhile, capturing
within months the all-too-real phenomenon of the collapse of the dot.com
internet boom. Probably because of this, critics have been falling all over each
other to out-praise the other in regards to this film. The truth is, if you are
enthralled by all-things business, you'll probably be enthralled by the
rags-to-riches-to-rags story of the rise and fall of govWorks.com, a startup
begun by two late-20-something men who have been best friends since high school.
But for the rest of us, after awhile Startup.com starts to feel like
we've been forced to go to work on a Saturday. The story IS interesting, but a
bit overly long and excessively detailed about the whole financing process of
starting a business. I found myself more captivated by the collapse of the
friendship of these two visionary men, which added a more interesting (I think)
and human side to this story. I can get techno jargon any day, but it takes a
bit more to make me care about the computer nerd who's doing the talking.
