Spun What would Requiem For a Dream look like if it had a smaller budget, a more eclectically bizarre cast and was shot on 16mm by music-video director Jonas Åkerlund? Probably a lot like this warped, frenetic, freaked out, tweaked out (comedy? drama?) flick about college kid Ross (Jason Schwartzman), who's desperately looking to score some crystal meth. Being an addict is no easy task, and Ross's quest for that elusive high sends him through a series of misadventures involving what just might be one of the most unusual collections of characters ever assembled. Among them are paranoid dealer Spider Mike (John Leguizamo), his dazed and confused girlfriend, Cookie (Mena Suvari), and a master narcotic chef known as The Cook (played with frightening authenticity by, of all people, Mickey Rourke!). Toss in Brittany Murphy (who's getting weirder looking by the film) as Ross's strung-out, would-be love interest and the madness begins.

The movie's pace is set permanently on overdrive, and the vignettes fly past in a drug-induced frenzy, which makes for some bumps on the storytelling road. But just little ones. The look of the film is distinct—gross, dirty, greasy—and every single character seems to be in dire need of a good, long bath. Smashing Pumkins alum Billy Corgan handled the score, which adds a certain "cool" factor to the film's pedigree and few will debate the fact that, overall, the movie is seriously "messed up." It tries a little too hard to be cool and cutting edge, though, and it veered close to the now-it's-too-over-the-top line.

Writer Will De Los Santos says the film is based on his life and that many of the personalities onscreen are based the actual players he encountered during his days as a user. Frightening.
