I
liked this film better when it was called Jesus of Montreal. Except that
now Jesus has returned to modern-day Los Angeles, working wonders, befriending
Russian prostitutes, and raising the dead. He has a buzz-cut, and he and his
inevitable disciples dress with the tight-t-shirt/baggy pants look right out of
a Gap Khakis TV ad. Except instead of deadpanning to Depeche Mode lyrics, our
own personal Jesus (Darren Campbell) just walks the streets and looks, well,
angelic, as the soundtrack swims with the humming sound of a wet finger on the
edge of a wine glass (you know, spooky, yet new-agey at the same time).
Pretty-boy Campbell is fine as a peaceful yet magnetic character who can slip
into any language or situation like a worn pair of jeans. But the rest of the
film is, oh, I don't know... predictable? Sure we know how it's going to end,
but it seems the filmmakers didn't even try to be subtle (gosh, do you think the
guy named "Jude" will betray him?). The Greatest Story Told Over and
Over just comes across as an über-politically-correct rehash.
