The parallels cannot be denied, so let's just get them out in the open right away: Two women are the best and worst of friends. One woman is bitterly jealous of the other's life, but is simultaneously obsessed/in love with her. First clothes, then boyfriends are stolen,. Catfights are followed by sexy making-up. This sort of love/hate relationship will not end well (though this one doesn't quite have the spiked-heel-in-the-eyeball ending). Our two leads in this case are the sweetly lovely Pascale Bussières who plays Louise, and hot French star Emmanuelle Béart as Nathalie. Louise and Nathalie were best friends as drama students, but were so close that Louise imploded from her adoration and jealousy of her friend and basically dumped her to keep her sanity. Flash-forward 10 years. Louise is married and has a sensible job as some sort of dental technician. She stumbles across a performance of the now mildly successful actress Nathalie, and she approaches her tentatively after the show. They renew their friendship. And their competitiveness. And their lust. And their hate. Watch out for those spiked heels! With hotshot leads like the always-divine Bussières and the talented and nationally adored Béart, La Répétition is certainly watchable. But you start to realize that the question is not whether the story will end inevitably on a negative note, but how many times you will have to watch the friends repeat their endless destructive cycle. Hence "replay." Again. And again. And again. Sheesh! Can't you two realize that you don't exactly have the healthiest of relationships? |
