1999 - Japan
Director: Hiroyuki Tanaka - Reviewed by Linda I don't know what's going on in Japan lately, but they are sure making some very odd films these days! A salaryman wakes up in a strange hotel room on a Monday morning, fully dressed, and not knowing how he got there. Piece by piece, he slowly starts to remember his weekend, starting with a funeral wake he attends where the corpse explodes (won't bother explaining that one!). There is a deadpan dark humor throughout the movie, as he encounters yakuza gangsters, a mysterious woman, some thugs, and a shotgun. As it progresses to how he arrived in his current state, the humor dwindles to just about nothing, as it becomes not-very-subtle meditation on modern society and violence. Though this film is a bit uneven, it was very stylish (in a Pulp Fiction way) and very very funny at times, with strange scenes that start out hilarious, then just go on way too long, until they become absurd, kind of like the style of Hal Hartley or Jim Jarmusch (which of course I like). An interesting, memorable film. |
