Metrosexuality The latest gay-themed TV series from the UK's Channel 4 (who introduced us to the original Queer as Folk series) now offers us Metrosexuality. In a series of half-hour segments (after all, it IS a TV series), we are introduced to a bevy of literally colorful characters. Max (Rikki Beadle Blair) is pining for his ex-husband Jordan (Karl Collins), who has moved on. In the meantime, their straight son Kwame (Noel Clarke) is trying to get his two dads back together, and has found out that his best gay friend has a thing for his dad Max....

Believe me, that is just a sampling of the main characters, who number a solid dozen or so.

But let's get back to the "colorful" part. The world of Metrosexuality is awash in neon, bright pastels, and vibrant primary colors. At the festival screening, director Beadle Blair (himself looking like a human disco ball), explained that he wanted a dreamscape setting, where everything was much more vivid than everyday life—fun and exaggerated, in a sensory-overload way. Well it certainly is that. Combining a frenetic MTV-style editing and cinematography with a proliferation of heavily-accented (for poor American ears) one-liners, I admit, it was kind of hard to keep up with Metrosexuality. To tell you the truth, the whole thing made me very sleeeeepy. I ended up skipping the last two of the six episodes to go home and go to bed.

Metrosexuality is a lot of fun without being too deep. I could see it as an enjoyable diversion to catch on the telly every week or two, but not really anything more than that.
