Carlo (Stefano Accorsi) has a super-hot and smart girlfriend Giulia (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) whom he has been with for a few years. As they are nearing 30, well, they decide to get married and start a family. After all, Carlo's circle of buddies are falling into the shackles of marriage one by one. (You'd think they are being rounded up and thrown into prison... the horrors!) As the movie opens with one of the guys' weddings, we see that Carlo has a desperate wandering eye. Freaking out about getting married, he pursues an affair with a high school girl that he picks up at the wedding, because, you know, it might be his last chance. Meanwhile, a couple of the other guys are also having their early mid-life crises, and are thinking of quitting their jobs and their various "stifling" home lives, and driving a van across Africa. You see, they don't want to be "tied down" by the families that they bothered starting in the first place. I guess we are supposed to sympathize with these dorks because at least they feel (to various degrees) kind of guilty. And the women characters are at least developed enough that we see how stupid they are being by treating them like crap. But still, these guys all deserve a good, swift, kick in the ass, as well a stern lesson in reality and responsibility. You may guess that I have little patience for the "boys will be boys" genre of movies, especially when the "boys" are freakin' old enough to know better. Sheesh. The Last Kiss offers nothing new in relationship movies, except subtitles and a pretty Italian cast. |
