Mitchell - Reviewed by Tim Gay adoption is a much-disputed topic in many circles, and gay foster parents is an even hotter topic. Personally, I feel that if a gay couple wants to open their home to a child, either adoption or foster care, they should be allowed to do so. I know… there are groups that say that homosexuality is a learned behavior and there are others that think that it is simply the orientation of the person from birth. Either way, should a child be denied a loving, stable and safe home based on the orientation of the people in it? Talk amongst yourselves. Phil (Cameron Watson), a lawyer, and Eric (Anthony Meindl), a family counselor, are a very successful Beverly Hills gay couple and have planned on adopting a baby. On their 6th anniversary, they are surprised when a social worker, Gloria (Kimberly Scott), shows up with a difficult set of brothers, T.J. (Grady Hutt) and Brian (Blayn Barbosa). At first, the boys were to only be with Phil and Brian for just one night, but this keeps getting extended. As with most foster kids, there is a bit of bitterness from the kids about being moved from home to home. Along with T.J. and Brian, the couple inadvertently takes in the boy’s mother Cat (Elaine Hendrix), a down-on-her-luck drug addict. She seems to care about her kids, but has no clue that her lifestyle has any effect on them. As a result of her actions, she is in the process of losing all of her legal parental rights and, obviously, has a problem with this. Given this situation, there is a power struggle having to do with the kids. This story has the feel of a mainstream movie, and would get more distribution if the couple was the traditional male/female combination. Unfortunately, it may not get the distribution it deserves. It’s a movie that, if you cast a couple of big names and throw in a couple of popular pop songs, would be heralded as a heart-warming feel-good movie. I recommend it, not only to the gay population, but to those who like to see a good story. There have been some reviews that exclaim that this is “the best gay movie I have ever seen!”, but I have to disagree with such robust adoration. It is good, but there are some very charming films that I would put a little further up on my list. |
