Family PackIt's the summer of 1969, and photographer Sacha (Marie Bunel) has been living happily with another woman in Montreal. Problem is, her family in Belgium still thinks she is in medical school, is on her way to becoming a doctor, and will settle down and get married soon. Hmm. Girlfriend tells her to come out already, so Sacha goes home to face her quirky family who seems frozen in the time she left two years ago. Dad is trying to save the family business, older sister (a dwarf!) is bitter about not being the favorite, and mom is on the verge of a breakdown. Of course, every time Sacha tries to talk, she gets cut off or distracted, so it takes the whole movie for the revelation of her true life in Canada to come out. Family Pack is kind of sweet—after all, Vander Stappen produced the delightful Ma Vie en Rose a few years back. But this film, her directorial debut, lacks the inherent charm of that film. It is a little too soft-focusy to earn the cooing murmurs of understanding it tries to squeeze out of the viewer.
