| THE CALL OF CTHULHU |
2005 – USADirector: Andrew Leman

The film is set in the 1920s and is shot in the style of the time. The lighting, makeup, sets and even the pantomime, that give the silents from the early days of film a unique quality and richness, were delivered successfully here. I’m not going to give anything up about the story in case you’ve never read any H.P. Lovecraft, except that you will see Cthulhu and you shall peer into madness. You can track a copy of the film down here http://www.cthulhulives.org and go get to reading some Lovecraft! At the showing I attended the director was present and available to answer questions after the movie. The story of the film's creation was great: In high school he and a friend had started role-playing their favorite Lovecraft stories. This continued over the years and became more and more elaborate, until they had the realization they were doing everything needed to make a movie except holding up a camera. With that they were off and running. Drawing upon a group of talented friends from various theatre groups, they made a low budget ($50 thousand by his estimates at the Q & A) that could live up to the legend of Lovecraft. To the credit of Lovecraft fans who offered up their own time to translate the film, its now available in 24 different languages. |
