Having just lost a relative who was something like a cross between Kyle and his sweet neighbor with the hoarding problem, I felt like Bobcat Goldthwait kind of nailed it. There is an immediate impulse to try to normalize the situation and keep a person's secrets, not only to save them from embarrassment, but to somehow keep yourself from going down with them. Lance's pain over the loss of his son is palpable, and his attempt to make Kyle's death look like a suicide truly is an act of love. The craziness that ensues as a result just goes to show that no good will come from hiding the truth. Sometimes you have to admit that a person was "kind of a douchebag", even if it means speaking ill of the dead. Only then can healing begin. For someone who hasn't exactly been taken seriously in his career, Goldthwait has managed to create a comedy that (for all its flaws) is smart, original, and moving, not to mention an excellent outlet for the multi-talented Robin Williams.
