If you're in the mood to feel the testosterone flow, this is a perfectly acceptable choice.
I've always considered myself an action movie girl, but once in awhile I'll stumble upon something so thoroughly dripping with testosterone that I simply wind up feeling like a girl. That girl rides sidesaddle on horses and twists her hair while snapping her bubble gum and waxing poetic about the cute boys on the covers of record albums. That girl, despite her passionate love for all things Rambo, Die Hard, or Lethal Weapon, does not understand the complicated things police officers say to each other. Sometimes she forgets who is chasing who. And sometimes a bunch of substance abuse and violence becomes so much white noise. Blitz turned me into that girl.
Admittedly, there's nothing really wrong with the movie. It's typical Jason Statham fare, and it's jam packed with kickass action and wry humor from the get-go. If you're in the mood for a gritty bad guys vs. worse guys smackdown, Blitz is the perfect choice. Statham stars as Detective Tom Brant, a fairly shady cop with little regard for policy and procedure. Though his unorthodox tactics often get the job done, there is a definite moral ambiguity to his character. The same can be said of most of his colleagues, but despite their indiscretions, they still wind up looking good next to the filth on the streets.
When a serial killer who calls himself Blitz begins targeting cops, Brant teams up with Officer DC Porter Nash (Paddy Considine) to bring him down. What follows is an appropriate blitz of blood guts and mayhem in some grim sector of the UK. I'm hard pressed to tell you the finer details of the plot, but I can say that the action looked pret-ty exciting, and the bad boys in this film sure got a kick out of themselves and their witty one-liners. If you're in the mood to feel the testosterone flow, this is a perfectly acceptable choice. Otherwise, you might want to lean in favor of girlier fare, like that nice Rambo.
