Who watched The Jetsons?
Who watched The Jetsons? I don't just want a show of hands, I want demographics. How old were you, where did you live, and what year was it? I ask because I've never understood the intended audience for this show. Even as a kid, nothing clicked - George's workplace humor was a bore, Judy's teenage antics were tiresome, little Elroy was an annoying baby, and I kind of wanted to give that infernal robot housekeeper a good shove...and maybe kick her until her brains were sticking out of her head in a tangle of loose screws and broken springs. Ahem. Did I just say that out loud? Well she was an awfully big busybody for a machine! If you could somehow mechanize and cartoonize Hazel, don't you think you'd dial down the nagging and constant yammering?! To top it all off the show created its own bizarre anachronism with its 60's sensibilities and futuristic setting.
So, now that I'm off to a positive start, let me tell you a bit about Rockin With Judy Jetson, a feature length Jetsons movie that originally aired on television in 1988. Like most teenagers, Judy Jetson loves rock and roll, and like most old-fashioned fathers, George hates this new-fangled noise. Regardless, Judy nurses a huge crush on teen sensation, Sky Rocker, even penning an amazing song for a contest. She wins, but her lyrics are switched out for an evil spell written by an evil space witch! You know how it goes. Sky Rocker is kidnapped, and Judy must enlist the help of her friends and the whole Jetsons gang to save her crush and rock music itself.
Like most Hanna-Barbera animated features, the story line is somewhat unrelatable for its obvious audience. Young fans of shows like Hannah Montana and iCarly might relate to the teen idol aspect of the storyline, but it's likely that Rockin' With Judy Jetson will be most appreciated by its original fans...whoever they were.
