It's not likely to win any awards, but this goofy little movie deserves kudos for making the most of a tiny budget.
If you're looking for a sequel to
Repo Man,
Repo Chick is not your answer. Though helmed by the same director,
Repo Chick is simply an addition to what Alex Cox calls the "repo genre" which, given our current economic state, is only likely to become more relateable. Though not quite as cool as the 1984
Repo Man,
Repo Chick is a surreal, cartoonish romp that's plenty of fun in its own right.
Filmed on a budget of $200,000 and utilizing green screen technology to creative ends, Repo Chick follows the adventures of Pixxi De La Chasse (Jaclyn Jonet), a spoiled, irresponsible rich girl who is disinherited for her antics. When the repo men come to collect her car, they discover a formidable opponent who might be well suited to work in the field. With the help of her friends, er, entourage, this spunky fashionista quickly moves to the top of the repo game. But why bother with usual repos like cars and appliances when you can go for the big money in trains?
Pixxi and her pals strike out to find a pair of antique railroad cars and procure a million dollar reward, but they soon find themselves in over their heads. Naturally they get mixed up with a band of terrorists who demand the criminalization of golf (I mean, duh). If the demands are not met, the bad guys will steer their train (bearing a load of growler bombs) right into downtown L.A.! Can Pixxi somehow save the day? I should think so!
Though completely ridiculous and over the top, Repo Chick has to be given props for originality. The sets are often little more that model railroads (green screened into the picture), but the characters (brought to us by the likes of Rosanna Arquette, Karen Black, and Chloe Webb) are larger than life. It's not likely to win any awards, but this goofy little movie deserves kudos for making the most of a tiny budget.
