...an impromptu performance from Hall and Oates officially makes everything all right.
No matter what sort of person you were in high school, there are undoubtedly a few old classmates you could do without seeing again. Maybe you were tormented by a bully, maybe you did a few things you aren't proud of, but there's solace in knowing that that chapter of your life is safely in the past...until someone pops up in the most unavoidable way and leaves you going, "Oh. You Again."
Such is the case for Marni (Kristen Bell) a successful, independent lady with a glamorous behind-the-scenes Hollywood career who is forced to relive the horror of her high school years when she discovers that her brother is about to marry her teenage nemesis, Joana (Odette Yustman). Memories of bad hair, braces, and taunting come flooding back, leaving Marni an insecure mess in possession of a terrible secret. How can she let her brother marry a girl she knows is an awful person? Though Joana pretends not to recognize Marni, it soon becomes clear that she's only hiding her past, playing the part of a saintly nurse who prizes family and charity work above all else. Having tragically lost both of her parents, no one's really going to question her motives or her past...except Marni, and even she feels guilty about it half the time.
The plot thickens when Joana's Aunt Ramona (the fabulous Sigourney Weaver) shows up to support her niece. Soon Marni's mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) is having a, "You again?!" moment of her own as she flashes back to her troubled frenemy relationship with Ramona. Turns out Marni's mom was a bit of a mean girl herself, and now all four women are forced to face the past.
Though there's a great deal of broad comedy in the film and it does ramble at certain points, You Again is strangely poignant and healing. The subject matter is so relatable that it's difficult not to put yourself in Marni's shoes...or Joana's, or Ramona's, or Gail's. Whether you were dishing out the nastiness or taking it, we've all got skeletons in our closet, but there must be a way for us to move forwards as adults. You Again shows that forgiveness can free us from the past, and an impromptu performance from Hall and Oates officially makes everything all right.
