A clever take on a classic tale.
Oh readers, allow me
To share some good news
Of a shiny new film
From one Dr. Suess
And unlike that turd with
Mike Myers in fur
This flick’s cute and funny
This flick I prefer
It’s done by computer
Jim Carrey’s the lead
As elephant Horton
And Whoville’s in need!
For Whoville exists as
A speck oh-so-wee
Upon a pink clover
It sits there, you see
And one day dear Horton
Hears voices quite nigh
From Whos down in Whoville
Two eyelashes high
“There’s life on that clover!
A city down there!
So teeny, so fragile!
They don’t have a prayer!”
Horton springs to their aid
Protect them, he must!
From nature, from squashing
From one sudden gust
He tries to find help from
His jungle-ville friends
They all think him crazy
“He’s gone ‘round the bend!”
Meanwhile, down in Whoville
The mayor’s a wreck
His town sits in peril
Who’ll save their fair speck?!
A story unfolds with
Adventure and mirth
Exploding with color
And pachyderm girth
It’s funny and lively
You’ll laugh, you might cry
It meets with Suess stylings
The minutes fly by
Now, purists may frown at
This tale tweaked and spun
That doesn’t quite follow
From whence it’s begun
Some new stuff’s been added
Some characters fresh
But in the big picture
All elements mesh
The voices work wonders
I love Steve Carell
And Carol Burnett plays
A ‘roo sent from Hell
It does lean to “busy”
And wacky and wild
Made less for the tastes of
A parent than child.
But mostly I treasured
Its message to all:
A person’s a person
No matter how small.
