I guess that when you prove to Hollywood that you can kick ass and have people line up to be the next whipping boy, you tend to get typecast in that role.
OK, here we are going into the theater to see another movie with that very nice Ashley Judd in it. The problem with that statement is that each time I sit down to take in what I hope is going to be a stretch for her, turns out to be just about the same character as she almost always plays, in a story that is almost the same as that last one. I guess that when you prove to Hollywood that you can kick ass and have people line up to be the next whipping boy, you tend to get typecast in that role.
In Twisted, Jessica Shepard (Judd), after catching the bad guy, gets promoted to inspector in the homicide division. There is speculation that her promotion was a result of her father-figure and police chief, John Mills (Samuel L. Jackson), rather than her skills. The tough girl proves herself to be worthy and that she deserves to be where she’s at, I have no problem with that, but there’s more to it.
Turns out that not only did Jessica have a rough childhood, but is now an alcoholic nymphomaniac. She has a tendency to walk into a bar, order a shot, look at a guy with that certain "look"—you know what I'm talkin' 'bout—and say, "You live around here?" and, BAM, off the bedroom we go. I told you, Jessica’s got mad-skills. I mean, really, if Ashley walked up to you and said that, would you turn her down? I think not. But anyway....
On her first day in her new position, she is teamed up with a creepy guy called Mike Delmarco (Garcia), who’s got that smarmy way about him. He’s really not a very interesting character and I found that I could almost do without him all together. Anyway, their first case turns out to be one of Jessica’s one-nighters. Coincidence? That’s what the bad scripting will unfold throughout the rest of the film.
It’s almost like I walked into this film thinking that I would get something different from what I knew was barreling towards me, but I was blinded by that very nice Ashley Judd. Disappointed? Not really, but I have admit I’ll be sucked into her next movie—because she’s just that cute and gives VERY good back in this film—but I’ll kick and squirm may way through it, too. Remember when she was that young refreshing strong girl in Kiss the Girls? Oh, how I long for those days…
All in all, Twisted wasn't terrible, but it was quite forgettable.
